Gale Allen
Gale Allen is a Golden Age science-fiction heroine who headlined her own feature, Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron, in Fiction House's Planet Comics. She led an all-female squadron of space adventurers, a notable distinction for a wartime-era comic.
Straight out of the Golden Age rocket fuel of 1942, Gale Allen blazed onto the pages of Fiction House's beloved Planet Comics β one of the great pulp sci-fi anthologies of the era β where she held her own alongside cosmic adventurers like Auro, Flint Baker, and The Star Pirate. Created by Art Saaf, she headlined her own feature, Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron, a remarkable distinction for any character of that period, let alone one debuting in the thick of World War II. Her presence across nearly eight decades of publication history, from 1942 all the way through 2019, speaks to an enduring appeal that collectors and Golden Age enthusiasts have kept very much alive. If you're drawn to the pioneering women of early science fiction comics and the wonderfully lurid charm of Fiction House at its height, Gale Allen is absolutely worth seeking out.
