Who is Deputy Dawg?

Deputy Dawg is a bumbling but good-natured Southern lawman from the Terrytoons animated universe, tasked with keeping order while contending with wisecracking critters who constantly outwit him. His comedic misadventures as an inept deputy formed the basis of both his cartoon and comics appearances.

Straight out of the Silver Age, Deputy Dawg made his comics debut in Dell's New Terrytoons #1 in 1960, brought to the page by Dan Gormley as part of the wonderfully lively Terrytoons universe. This lovable lawman kept colorful company throughout his run — sharing adventures with the likes of Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, Dinky Duck, and Silly Sidney — a roster that speaks to the sheer fun energy of Dell's animated-character comics of the era. With a publishing presence stretching all the way to 1991, Deputy Dawg proved himself a surprisingly enduring figure in the funny-animal tradition. If you have a soft spot for Silver Age Dell humor comics and the golden days of Terrytoons, he's a charming corner of the collection worth tipping your hat to.
