Claw
Few villains carry the menace of a Golden Age antagonist who's been making trouble since 1943, and Claw — born in the pages of Captain Battle Jr. under the Lev Gleason banner — is exactly that kind of enduring sinister presence. Dreamed up by Joseph Greene and Don Rico, this wartime-era bad guy crossed paths with some of Lev Gleason's finest, sharing pages with the legendary Daredevil and Bart Hill across Captain Battle Jr., Daredevil, and Fantastic Comics. The fact that a character debuting in the thick of the Golden Age was still turning up in catalog records as late as 2008 speaks to a staying power that most heroes — let alone villains — never achieve. For collectors with a taste for the atmospheric darkness of early comics, Claw is a genuine piece of the Golden Age's shadowy, pulp-soaked soul.
