Bernie Mireault
Bernie Mireault made their comics debut in the very first issue of Drawn & Quarterly in 1990, stepping onto the page at the dawn of what would become one of the most celebrated independent publishers in the medium. Created by P. Bagge for that landmark debut issue, this character belongs to the intimate, personal world of alternative comics that defined the early 1990s indie scene. With appearances also in Peepshow: The Cartoon Diary of Joe Matt, Bernie keeps genuinely eclectic company — sharing pages with the likes of Joe Matt, Matt Wagner, and even John Lennon and Jesus Christ, which tells you something about the freewheeling, anything-goes spirit of the comics they inhabit. A small but real piece of alternative comics history, Bernie Mireault is a name worth knowing for any collector with a soft spot for the groundbreaking early days of Drawn & Quarterly.
