Barefootz
Few characters capture the freewheeling spirit of early-'70s underground comix quite like Barefootz, who burst onto the scene in 1973's Commies from Mars #1 courtesy of creator Grass Green and the beloved Kitchen Sink Press. A genuine Bronze Age underground original, this character earned enough of a following to anchor their own title, Barefootz Funnies, a rare distinction in the scrappy, anything-goes world of alternative comics. The run may have been brief — winding down by the late '70s — but that compact body of work represents a wonderfully authentic slice of an era when indie cartoonists were rewriting the rules of the medium. For collectors with a soft spot for Kitchen Sink's irreverent catalog, Barefootz is a charming and historically resonant discovery.
