What Is Turok, Son of Stone?

Turok, Son of Stone is one of the great classic Western/adventure comics, published by Dell starting in 1956 and running through 1982 — with 27 issues cataloged here from the initial Dell run through 1962. The series follows Turok, a Native American warrior, and his young companion Andar, who become trapped in a hidden valley ("Lost Valley") populated by dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. The two must survive using their wits, bows, and poison arrows — the arrows tipped with a substance called "Honk" that can take down even the largest dinosaur. The book was groundbreaking for centering a Native American protagonist in a heroic role during an era when that was virtually unheard of. After Dell, the series continued under Gold Key and later Valiant, where a modernized Turok was reimagined in the early 1990s to great success.
