# Museum Catalog Note
This issue of Beadle's Dime Novels (No. 298) contains "The Hussar Captain: The Hermit of Hell-Gate," by Col. Prentiss Ingraham. Set during the British occupation of New York in 1776, the narrative follows Captain Glen Tarleton, a dashing officer in Washington's Continental Army. After disarming an English grenadier guard, Tarleton is pursued through the streets and toward the East River. A mysterious cloaked stranger intervenes, defeating a dragoon sentinel, and rescues Tarleton in a small sailing vessel. The rescuer navigates the dangerous waters of Hell-Gate to a hidden cove, where a cavern serves as his secret headquarters. The cave dwelling, equipped with provisions, weapons, and furnishings, suggests the stranger operates as a covert agent. The serial combines Revolutionary War intrigue with adventure narrative, featuring combat scenes and escape sequences. The story emphasizes Tarleton's bravery and military skill within a framework of espionage and patriotic resistance.
