The Buffalo-Trapper

· July 2, 1870

The Buffalo-Trapper (Beadle's Dime Novels No. 207) by Charles E. Lasalle is a frontier adventure tale set in Missouri. The narrative opens in a tavern during a storm where three strangers converse: Waufy, a grizzled veteran trapper; Lieutenant Willard Putnam, awaiting a delayed military exploring party; and Jabez Spikes, a garrulous Yankee. Waufy recounts an extraordinary frontier experience: while fleeing Blackfeet warriors with fellow trapper Lije Havens, he encounters a white buffalo in a mountain stream. After climbing a tree to escape pursuers, Waufy falls asleep in the branches and tumbles onto the buffalo's back as it passes beneath. The animal bolts, carrying Waufy on a wild ride across dangerous terrain while pursued by gunfire, the white buffalo proving faster than the attackers' horses.
