The Seminole Chief

# Catalog Note

This issue contains two serial stories. "Bowlegs, the Seminole Chief; or, The Captives of the Kissimmee," a tale of the Florida Everglades by the author of "Silver Bugle," dominates the issue. The narrative opens with an old settler, Stephen Loveday, seeking Colonel David Twiggs's aid after learning that hostile Seminoles—including the renegade James MacDonald ("Black Jim")—are in the area. Loveday's daughter Jessie was abducted by MacDonald a year prior. When Twiggs arrests the three Indians and MacDonald found drinking in the settlement, one of the captives confronts the colonel with cool audacity, challenging his honor and demonstrating fearlessness before superior force. The issue also previews Edward S. Ellis's "The Fugitives: A Tale of the Wyoming Massacre," promised for next week's edition, featuring Ellis's characteristic forest imagery applied to the historical Wyoming tragedy.
