This is not a Victorian penny dreadful, but rather a 1923 signed limited edition of The Taking of Helen by poet John Masefield. The narrative poem retells the classical myth of Helen of Troy through original verse. The story concerns Nireus, prince of Syme, who falls in love with Helen, the beautiful wife of elderly King Menelaus of Sparta. When Paris of Troy arrives at court and seduces Helen, she arranges escape by ship with his aid. Nireus, himself devoted to Helen, provides a vessel for their flight. However, King Menelaus has discovered their plan through spies and intends to capture and execute Paris, using the scandal to provoke war against Troy. The narrative employs classical dramatic irony: Nireus unknowingly facilitates his rival's escape while the King manipulates events toward greater conflict. The verse combines lyrical passages describing the characters with dramatic dialogue revealing court intrigue and political calculation beneath romantic entanglement.
