Stéphane Blanquet
Stéphane Blanquet was born in 1973 near Paris, France, and has been a restless, prolific presence in French contemporary art and comics since the late 1980s. He is best known for a wildly imaginative, often grotesque visual style that blends childlike whimsy with dark, surreal undercurrents—a signature approach that makes his work instantly recognizable. Blanquet’s comics career, spanning from 1997 to 2018, saw him credited as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on a dozen issues. His most prominent titles include contributions to the *Donjon Monsters* series, as well as work in the anthologies *Zero Zero* and *Now*. He also produced the distinctive albums *Guimauves*, *Le Lombric*, and *Nasenbluten*. While he has collaborated with key figures in the European alt-comics scene, his path has been largely that of a singular auteur, creating deeply personal, often unsettling worlds. Blanquet’s work extends well beyond comics into multimedia art, sculpture, and illustration, cementing his reputation as a boundary-pushing creator. He has received significant recognition in France, including the prestigious Prix de l’Audace at the Angoulême International Comics Festival, honoring his fearless originality. His legacy endures as a vital, eccentric force who expanded the visual and narrative possibilities of the medium.
