Jaime Vallvé

Born in Barcelona in 1928, Jaime Vallvé began drawing comics as a teenager before pursuing formal art training in France. He eventually settled in Denmark in 1960, where he would spend the greater part of his life and career. Though he contributed to various comics projects after his arrival, his breakthrough came in 1972 when he began working on the Phantom, the long-running adventure strip featuring the costumed hero known as the Ghost Who Walks.

Vallvé found his particular niche within the Phantom universe during the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, concentrating on stories set in earlier historical periods — work that suited his draftsmanlike approach to period detail and atmosphere. Over the course of his career he produced a substantial body of work across Scandinavian comics publications, including Fantomen, Fantomet, Mustanaamio, and Johan Vilde, credited as artist, colorist, inker, and occasionally writer across more than 160 issues. He drew his 116th and final Phantom adventure in 1996, capping a run that had shaped how generations of Nordic readers experienced the character.

Vallvé died on 15 October 2000. His work endures in reprint editions throughout Scandinavia and Finland, a testament to the quiet consistency he brought to one of adventure comics' most durable franchises.
