Chris Ware
Franklin Christenson Ware, better known as Chris Ware, was born on December 28, 1967. He is an American cartoonist who began his career in the late 1980s, gaining prominence with his *Acme Novelty Library* series, which launched in 1994. His work is characterized by a vivid color palette, meticulous detail, and elaborate lettering and imagery that often evoke early 20th-century American design, particularly the ragtime era. Ware’s stories delve into themes of social isolation, emotional torment, and depression, as seen in his acclaimed graphic novels *Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth* (2000), *Building Stories* (2012), and *Rusty Brown* (2019). He is known for a self-effacing, even withering tone in his public persona. Critics and peers, including writer Dave Eggers and cartoonist Seth, regard him as a transformative figure in the medium; Seth noted that Ware raised the bar for his contemporaries. Ware has been credited as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on 67 issues from 1987 to 2022, with his most recognized titles including *Acme Novelty Library*, *Building Stories*, *Quimby the Mouse*, and *Jimmy Corrigan*. His legacy is that of a meticulous craftsman who reshaped the possibilities of the graphic novel form.
