Chris Ware, born Franklin Christenson Ware on December 28, 1967, in Omaha, Nebraska, is an American cartoonist who redefined the possibilities of the comic form. He is best known for his long-running *Acme Novelty Library* series (debuting in 1994) and the acclaimed graphic novels *Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth* (2000), *Building Stories* (2012), and *Rusty Brown* (2019). Ware’s work plumbs themes of social isolation, emotional torment, and depression, rendered in a vivid color palette with meticulous, realistic detail. His elaborate lettering and imagery often evoke early 20th-century American design, particularly the ragtime era.

Ware entered comics in the late 1980s, contributing to anthologies like *Blab!* before launching his own series. He collaborates closely with his own work, serving as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer across 67 issues. He is known for self-effacing, even withering public commentary about his own output. Despite this, critics and peers—including Dave Eggers and fellow cartoonist Seth—consider him among the best working in the medium; Seth noted that Ware “really changed the playing field,” prompting many cartoonists to raise their standards. Ware’s legacy includes major awards, though specific honors are not detailed here. He continues to influence cartoonists with his exacting craft and emotional depth.
