A Flight of Angels #[nn]
Rebecca Guay conceived and illustrated this Vertigo anthology, and her cover painting makes an immediate case for why — two winged figures, one with dark blue-streaked hair and teal-patterned markings, lean toward each other in a near-kiss, their entwined hands cradling a small glowing red orb against a warm golden halo of light. The composition, all cascading auburn hair, dark feathers, and Art Nouveau-inflected grace, sets a mood that is at once intimate and otherworldly. Writers Holly Black, Bill Willingham, Alisa Kwitney, Louise Hawes, and Todd Mitchell each contribute to the framing story, making this 2013 Vertigo volume a genuinely inviting collaboration between a remarkable artist and some of fantasy's most thoughtful voices.
