Weird Tales, Vol. 12, No. 2

· August 1928

This August 1928 issue of Weird Tales features pulp fantasy and horror stories. The cover story is Robert E. Howard's "Red Shadows," depicting Solomon Kane pursuing the bandit Le Loup across a wild valley after discovering a murdered peasant girl. The narrative establishes Kane as an avenger hunting Le Loup's band; Kane has systematically killed the bandits Jean, Juan, and La Costa, inscribing his initials on their corpses. When a wounded bandit reaches Le Loup's cave lair reporting the slaughter of men sent to torture a hermit and the approach of the dark-clad Kane, the chief and his remaining men decide to flee with their treasure, though Le Loup betrays his companion the Rat, murdering him to avoid sharing the spoils.

Other contributions include Frank Belknap Long Jr.'s Haitian ghost tale "You Can't Kill a Ghost," Everil Worrell's science-fiction story "Vulture Crag" involving planetary projection, Edmond Hamilton's serial "Crashing Suns" set in a distant future, and Thomas Lanier Williams's "The Vengeance of Nitocris" concerning ancient Egyptian revenge.
