Weird Tales, Vol. IX, No. 5

· May 1927

This May 1927 issue of Weird Tales features "The Master of Doom" by Donald Edward Keyhoe, a weird-scientific story. The narrative begins with Stanley Graham, an aviator stationed in Guam, piloting a seaplane with Betty, the governor's niece, to investigate a reported vanishing island. After receiving a distress signal from Radio Hill, Graham discovers that Guam itself has mysteriously sunk beneath the sea. Flying toward Saipan with fuel running low, Graham discovers an uncharted island containing a massive white stone structure—a circular building five hundred feet in diameter with a central tower and radiating metal bands. The OCR text cuts off as Graham prepares to land. The story is illustrated by C. C. Senf. The issue also contains "The Veiled Prophetess" by Seabury Quinn featuring Jules de Grandin; "Explorers Into Infinity" (part 2) by Ray Cummings, an interplanetary serial; "In Kashla's Garden" by Oscar Schisgall concerning hypnotism; and verse by Robert E. Howard.
