The Argosy, Vol. 15

· April 1, 1873

This issue of The Argonaut (April 1, 1873) contains chapter ten of "The Master of Greylands" by the author of East Lynne, a domestic drama serialized across multiple installments. The chapter depicts the collapse of the Stilborough bank following banker Peter Castlemaine's sudden death from heart disease, ruining his creditors. Young Anthony Castlemaine has mysteriously disappeared at Friar's Keep, implicating the Master of Greylands. His daughter Mary Ursula sacrifices her entire fortune to restore the bank's honor. When her engagement to William Blake-Gordon is threatened by his father Sir Richard's disapproval of her now-impoverished status, Mary writes offering to release him. William visits her to discuss their separation, though his letter reveals continued devotion despite his weakness in opposing his father's demands.
