This volume contains the second half of Argosy's thirty-ninth year (July–December 1879), edited by Mrs. Henry Wood. The principal serial is "Called to the Rescue," illustrated by M. Ellen Edwards, continuing chapters XIX–XXXVII. The narrative concerns Ernest Archdale's transition from military service to commerce; he works earnestly at Bourne and Son's counting-house despite initial struggle, gaining respect from colleagues and managers. Cecilia Wilmot, visiting the Bourne household, strategically arranges for Ernest's dinner invitation. The volume also contains numerous shorter fiction pieces: Johnny Ludlow's papers including "The Curate of St. Matthew's," stories by contributors like F. E. M. Notley and Charles Hervey, and pieces on historical figures (Lady Mary Wortley Montague, John Newton). Poetry contributions come from G. B. Stuart, George Stronach, and others. Content spans domestic fiction, historical sketches, and moral narratives typical of Victorian family periodicals.
