The Whirlpool

· 1913

"The Whirlpool," a novelette by Eleanor M. Ingram, concerns Claire Howard, an imperious quarry owner in the Hudson River valley, who encounters Stephen Viviani, a mysterious workman seeking employment. When Claire's arrogance causes her to slip into a dangerous stone-crushing pit, Viviani rescues her at great personal risk, fashioning an improvised rope from her stockings and shoes. Though grateful, Claire initially distances herself from him. When she later visits the quarries to offer him work, she observes Viviani in the engine room, where he demonstrates unexpected education and refinement. Meanwhile, Cesare Pulci, an Italian worker, approaches Viviani with a threatening invitation to meet a secret group operating from the quarries, hinting at criminal activity and Viviani's possible hidden motives for taking the job.
