"The Panther Terror" by Captain R. M. Hawthorne is a frontier adventure following fourteen-year-old Dick Pringle and his twelve-year-old sister Maggie as they walk home through Mohawk Valley woods one winter night. Despite warnings from their host, Dick travels unarmed until Mr. Caven insists he take a loaded flintlock rifle. When a panther begins stalking them on the path, Maggie's terror interferes with Dick's first shot, allowing the beast to flee. As the creature returns for a second attack, Dick successfully kills it with a clean shot through the skull. The issue also includes a brief humorous anecdote about Congressman Frank Lawler's doorkeeper mistakenly turning away Lawler's own wife, a short poem titled "A Lost Day" by Emma Burr, and the continuation of a serialized story by Captain C. B. Ashley about Luke Bennett and refugees hiding on an island from Colonel St. Clair.
