# Catalog Note

This local community publication contains wartime-era news and advertising from rural Alberta. The principal feature is an account of Mrs. Brading's return to Claresholm after visiting England during World War I. She witnessed American troop parades in London, German air raids on the southeast sections of the city, and troop departures from the Isle of Wight. Her passage home aboard the S.S. Metagama involved encounters with German submarines pursued by naval escort, and conveyed 1,700 wounded soldiers and 300 children. Additional content includes notices on military health standards, allied food control policies under Baron Rhondda, Canadian contributions to the war effort (431,466 enlisted troops, 1,801 nurses overseas), and parliamentary election petitions. The issue features Rex Theatre announcements for "The Little Orphan" and "The Morals of Hilda," along with advertisements for local merchants and services. A serialized novel, "The Squire's Sweetheart" by Katharine Tynan, begins in the issue, depicting correspondence regarding unspecified family circumstances and continental travel.
