Court Netherleigh

· 1881

This is Volume III of Mrs. Henry Wood's novel Court Netherleigh, published by Richard Bentley & Son in 1881. The text follows the marital separation of Mr. Grubb and his wife, Lady Adela. After discovering that Adela has committed forgery and theft to pay gambling debts—allowing her cousin Charles Cleveland to take the legal punishment—Mr. Grubb decides to separate from her permanently. He arranges generous financial terms with her father, Lord Acorn, stipulating that her allowance pass through her parents to prevent further gambling losses. Adela, meanwhile, flees her home in terror following a nightmare about arrest, fearing officers of justice will apprehend her, and wrestling with guilt over Charles's imprisonment for her crime.
