New Detective Stories by Sir Gilbert Campbell

· 1891

The Miser's Hoard by Sir Gilbert Campbell—The first story in this detective collection. Old Simon Grates, a wealthy miser living in a fortified London townhouse, is brutally murdered in a burglary along with his granddaughter Prudence Hatwell, though she survives gravely wounded. The masked burglar, seeking Grates' legendary wealth, finds almost nothing and steals a cryptic handwritten paper from Prudence. Only three hundred pounds is found in the bank, far below Grates' reported ten-thousand-pound fortune. Prudence recovers and marries her sweetheart Joe Varley, a printing foreman. Discovering the complete document reveals Grates hid valuables buried in the cellar of his cottage near Uxbridge. The young couple moves to the property and begins investigating, but a mysterious man begins following them, suggesting complications ahead in their treasure hunt.
