Beadle's Pocket Library No. 270

· March 13, 1889

This issue contains the opening installments of "Denver Doll's Mine," serialized by Edward L. Wheeler, author of the "Deadwood Dick" and "Denver Doll" novel series. Chapter I, "One Way to Lose a Mine," is set in the mining camp of Freshet Flats, Arizona. Jean La Force, a skilled card sharp and gambler, wins Denver Doll's Drift—the camp's only productive quartz mine—through a rigged card game, securing a mortgage after lending Denver Doll money she cannot repay by eleven that night. When Old Job defends the girl, a mysterious frontiersman named Arizona Alf intervenes, claiming to be Joaquin Murieta's avenger. A fistfight between Alf and La Force ensues. Chapter II shifts to a stagecoach robbery in a mountain gulch, where a masked road-agent halts the coach and demands the passengers exit. The narrative combines mining-camp adventure with criminal intrigue typical of frontier pulp fiction.
