This 1896 Beadle and Adams pulp magazine (No. 113) features the opening installment of "Dakota George, the Dead-Shot; or, The Half-Breed of the Hills," by Captain Frederick Whittaker, subtitled "A Story of the Great Manitoba League."

The narrative, set in 1876 during the Indian Wars at the Little Big Horn, depicts a cavalry attack on a Native American encampment. Sitting Bull, portrayed as the confederacy's strategic leader, coordinates defense alongside the warrior "White Falcon"—revealed to be a woman—and Crazy Horse of the Cheyennes. The opening chapter, "Brought to Bay," chronicles multiple assaults on the village, with escalating combat as successive soldier columns attack from different positions. The account emphasizes military tactics, cavalry charges, and pitched battle sequences, presenting Native American resistance and leadership alongside detailed descriptions of combat mechanics and troop movements throughout the engagement.
