# Museum Catalog Note
This March 1905 pulp magazine contains the opening chapter of a Western serial titled "Old Forked-Lightning, the Solitary," authored by an unnamed writer. The story follows Fremont Metcalf, a young man newly arrived in a mining town, as he enters a saloon called "The Grave," decorated with morbid death imagery—coffin-shaped signs, skeletal artwork, and funerary ornaments. The proprietor is Gabriel Sexton, a jovial, rotund former undertaker turned saloon-keeper who explains his macabre décor attracts patrons and complements his establishment's name. When a loud, belligerent miner named Romeo Bugg bursts in—covered with live insects pinned to his clothing—tension escalates. Metcalf has arrived in town accompanying his sister, and Sexton's gossipy remarks about her future provoke the young man's indignation. The narrative combines Western frontier dialect with gothic atmosphere as the installment closes with impending confrontation.
