The Knights of the Red Cross: The Marvellous [sic] of Granada

· April 1901

This 1901 issue of Knights of the Red Cross contains "The Magician of Granada: A Tale of the Alhambra," by Dr. J. H. Robinson, author of several other adventure tales. The narrative, set during the Moorish occupation of Granada, follows Sir Raoul Mornay, an English knight carrying dispatches from King Ferdinand to the Moorish King. After his retinue is ambushed, Mornay proceeds alone, guided by a witty Moorish youth named Ahab. He encounters the Knight of the Sleeping Leopard, a Moorish cavalier of noble bearing and vast wealth, who offers hospitality despite their religious opposition. The two knights agree to combat after Mornay completes his embassy. At the Vermilion Tower fortress, the Moorish knight warns Mornay against romantic entanglement with a beautiful maiden residing there—presumably a plot element involving forbidden attraction across religious lines typical of romantic adventure fiction.
