Beadle's Half Dime Library No. 611

· April 9, 1889

This issue of Beadle and Adams' weekly contains the opening of "The Tussle at Table Mountain" by Lieutenant A. K. Sims, a Western adventure serial. The narrative follows Bildad Barnacle, an awkward but powerful giant arriving in the gold-rush town of Deadwood. Despite a stage driver's warnings that gold-mining requires capital and that most prospectors fail, Bildad remains determined to seek his fortune at Table Mountain. Upon arrival, he scouts the town methodically and enters a prominent saloon. There he encounters Silver Jim, a local bully and self-proclaimed "King-Pin of Table Mountain," who repeatedly attempts to coerce Bildad into drinking despite his stated abstinence pledge to his family. The confrontation builds tension as Silver Jim's reputation hinges on dominating the stranger while Bildad calmly resists, refusing to be intimidated by the braggart's theatrical displays of strength and authority.
