Beadle's Half Dime Library No. 1154

· October 1904

"A Greenhorn in the Woods," by Capt. J. F. C. Adams, follows Percy Fitzsimmons, a Philadelphia dandy visiting his uncle's Minnesota homestead in August 1862 during the Sioux troubles. Armed with his uncle's rifle and eager to prove himself a sportsman, Percy ventures into the forest. He mistakenly fires twice at experienced hunter Zip Smith, believing him to be a Native American, missing both times. Zip warns Percy of imminent danger from local tribes and advises him to leave the remote woods, but Percy dismisses this counsel and resumes hunting. His incompetence continues when he shoots and kills his uncle's cow, which he mistakes for game. The narrative presents a comedy of errors involving a clueless Eastern gentleman confronting the frontier wilderness and its genuine perils.
