# Beadle's Dime Novels, No. 311

This issue presents "Foghorn Phil, the King of the Border; or, The Secret Foe" by Oll Coomes. Set in Montana's Panther Mountain region five years prior, the narrative opens with a solitary white hunter caught in a November blizzard on the open plain between the Powder and Big Horn rivers. Seeking shelter, he buries himself in snow while sensing mysterious hoofbeats approaching through the storm.

The second chapter introduces a man named Herman Rochelle and a young woman, Camilla, riding westward through the same tempest toward Black Pass. Pursued by a pack of wolves and battling harsh weather, they cross the frozen Powder River. During their desperate ride, Camilla glimpses a severed human head standing upright on the snow—a face she recognizes. The riders continue toward Panther Mountain's wooded pass as the storm intensifies, with wolves pursuing relentlessly.
