Beadle's Dime Novels No. 215: The Forest Monster
This issue contains two distinct serials. "The White Hermit: The Unknown Foe" by W. J. Hamilton is a romance set during the early settlement of Central New York, featuring Iroquois warriors, rangers, settlers, and frontier conflict. "The Forest Monster; or, Lamora, the Maid of the Canon" by Charles E. LaSalle is a Far West romance. The opening chapter depicts an emigrant party encamped on the prairie near the Black Hills during a spring snowstorm. Fred Hammond, an amateur hunter with the group, and his companion Beers stand guard when a lone horseman approaches. The rider proves to be a woman named Lamora, who warns them that a thousand Blackfeet warriors plan to attack the camp within hours. She urges immediate departure westward, claiming the war party will not pursue once they find the camp empty. Hammond is struck by her beauty and mysterious manner before she departs. The emigrants evacuate successfully.
