The Argosy

· Founded 1865

This volume of The Argosy (July-December 1878), edited by Mrs. Henry Wood, contains primarily the serial novel Pomeroy Abbey by the author of East Lynne, with illustrations by M. Ellen Edwards. The narrative follows the Pomeroy family's domestic and financial entanglements: young Annaline Hetley, a dependent child living with Lord and Lady Essington, is being sent home; Leolin Pomeroy arrives in London to consult lawyer Mr. Hildyard about dissolving his brother George's marriage to displace the child Lord of Pomeroy, seeking to recover his rightful title and estate. Lord Essington counsels against this, arguing the marriage was valid and Leolin's usurpation was unintentional.

The issue also includes short fiction—stories by Julia Kavanagh, Anne Beale, Charles W. Wood, and others—along with illustrated essays on historical and geographical topics (Orkney and Shetland Islands, the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmorc), biographical sketches (John Keats, Mary Lamb), and diverse poetry.
