# Catalog Note: "The Land That Time Forgot" by Edgar Rice Burroughs
This issue features the opening installment of Edgar Rice Burroughs's science-fiction adventure serial "The Land That Time Forgot." The narrative is framed as a manuscript discovered in a thermos bottle by a man vacationing in Greenland. The story proper begins in June 1916 with the protagonist, a Santa Monica shipbuilder's son trained in both submarine and aircraft design, boarding a passenger liner bound for France to join the ambulance service. A German U-boat (ironically built by his family's firm) torpedoes the ship without warning, causing catastrophic casualties. The protagonist and his Airedale dog survive in a lifeboat, rescuing a young woman who appears drowned but revives. She reveals she was engaged to a German naval officer. The narrative promises further revelations about a mysterious prehistoric realm called Caspak.
