· August 1928

This science-fiction serial, "Armageddon—2419 A.D." by Philip Francis Nowlan, depicts Anthony Rogers, a man who entered suspended animation in 1927 while trapped in a Pennsylvania coal mine after exposure to radioactive gas. He awakens in 2419 A.D. to discover America conquered by Mongolian Han forces who control fifteen glass cities while Americans survive as forest-dwelling resistance. Rogers encounters a young woman in green combat gear equipped with an anti-gravity belt and a silent-detonation weapon. When Han forces attack, Rogers uses her pistol to defend them, discovering the weapon's explosive projectiles and the belt's gravity-nullifying properties that enable fifty-foot leaps and cushioned falls. The narrative establishes Rogers's fish-out-of-water perspective as he learns of an imminent "Second War of Independence" being prepared by the underground American civilization.
