# "The Freak," by John I. Cochrane, M.D.
This October 1911 issue of Adventure magazine contains multiple fiction pieces and articles. The lead feature is Cochrane's complete novelette "The Freak," describing the eccentric Harvard student Trainor, a tall, muscular westerner known for elaborate practical jokes. To avoid a snooping landlady, Trainor fabricates an elaborate false address involving a millionaire eccentric living in a state house dome. The narrative teases an upcoming subplot involving Trainor's plans to manage a violent elderly relative at his cousins' home on North Avenue in Cambridge, threatening physical discipline with a bed-slat.
Other contents include "A Bit of Local Color" by Frederick Ferdinand Moore and "A Ledge of Safety" by Wolcott LeClear Beard; adventure and expedition narratives such as Russell B. Huffman's "Through Perilous Peru" detailing Andes survey work; "A Leak in the Jungle Trade" by Thomas Samson Miller; and serial installments including "Forbidden Treasure" (Lloyd and Martin) set in Iceland and Frank Savile's "The Road." Contributing authors also include Carolyn Wells, Gilbert Patten, and George Barton.
