Fox, Charles James, 1749-1806 · 1850s

Volume IV of the Memorials and Correspondence of Charles James Fox, edited by Lord John Russell and published in 1857 by Richard Bentley. This volume collects Fox's letters from 1803 to 1806, the final period of his correspondence. It features Fox's political exchanges with figures including R. Adair, Lord Holland, Lord Lauderdale, Lord Grey, and General Fitzpatrick regarding British foreign policy, relations with Napoleonic France, parliamentary strategy, and domestic political alignments. The letters reveal Fox's analysis of European conditions, Bonaparte's intentions, the conduct of the British Ministry, questions of war and peace, and discussions of potential political coalitions. Russell explains he published Lord Holland's collected materials rather than attempt a full biographical work himself, intending to provide Fox's political career narrative separately.
