The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green

Bede, Cuthbert · 1899

# Museum Catalog Note: Town and Gown (Part II, 1893)

This humorous novel by Cuthbert Bede follows Verdant Green, a naive Oxford undergraduate, through his second year at the university. The narrative encompasses his social misadventures, academic struggles, romantic entanglements, and sporting pursuits across the Oxford calendar. Major episodes include town-and-gown street riots between students and townspeople, boozy evenings spent with fellow undergraduates, awkward romantic encounters with local young women (particularly Miss Patty Honeywood), boating on the Cherwell with comical mishaps, failed attempts at rowing and cricket, and various drinking parties. Green befriends the witty Charles Larkyns and the roguish Mr. Bouncer, who serve as counterpoints to his provincial bumbling. The narrative concludes with his examination period and graduation ceremonies. Throughout, elaborate wood-engraved illustrations by the author depict college life, Oxford landmarks, social scenes, and slapstick incidents. The tone combines satirical commentary on undergraduate culture with physical comedy.
