Penny Dreadful Cover Design, mid-19th century
Fox, Charles James, 1749-1806 · circa 1850s
This is not a Victorian penny dreadful. This is Memorials and Correspondence of Charles James Fox, a serious political and biographical work edited by Lord John Russell and published in Philadelphia in 1853. The text comprises scholarly correspondence and biographical narrative concerning Charles James Fox (1749–1806), the prominent 18th-century Whig statesman. The editor divides Fox's life into seven periods for analysis, from his family background through his death. The work includes letters between Fox and Lord Holland (his uncle) dating 1790–1805, emphasizing Fox's literary interests, particularly in Greek and Italian poetry. The content traces Fox's ancestry from Sir Stephen Fox (b. 1627), documents his father Henry Fox's political career, and presents early biographical material about Charles James Fox's childhood, including anecdotal evidence from his father's letters depicting the boy as precocious, intelligent, lively, and passionate. The volume contains formal historical commentary marked by editorial attribution.
