# Memorials and Correspondence of Charles James Fox
This is an 1853 scholarly edition of biographical materials and correspondence concerning Charles James Fox (1749–1806), the prominent Whig politician and orator. Edited by Lord John Russell, the volume assembles letters, anecdotes, and commentary compiled over decades. The preface explains that Lord Holland began collecting materials for Fox's biography but left the work incomplete; Russell Allen then expanded these efforts. Russell completed the project for publication.
The introductory material outlines the work's structure as seven chronological periods spanning Fox's family background, education, parliamentary career from his 1768 entry through the American and French wars, to his death in 1806. The edition emphasizes Fox's literary interests, particularly in Greek and Italian poetry, as evident in letters between 1790–1805. The text includes original commentary marked by editor initials and brackets for clarity. Early passages discuss Sir Stephen Fox (born 1627), founder of the family fortune, and trace Fox's lineage through subsequent generations, establishing context for Charles James Fox's life and political career.
