# Beadle's Book of Practical Etiquette
This 1859 Dime Series publication, prepared by a committee of three, is a comprehensive guide to social conduct for both sexes. The volume addresses entrance into society, visiting protocols, dress codes, cleanliness, conversation, letter-writing, balls, evening parties, card games, dinner entertainments, street behavior, business politeness, courtship and marriage, respect for religion and age, horseback riding etiquette, and home conduct. Advice chapters target young men and women separately, with guidance on cultivating taste for beauty, art, and music. The introduction establishes that true gentility derives from the Golden Rule applied through knowledge of social usage. An extended illustrative anecdote follows, recounting the disastrous social debut of young Falconbridge—a bashful man whose ignorance of proprieties leads to a succession of humiliating mishaps at a parlor gathering: dropped hats, aggressive handshakes, stepped-on dress flounces, collapsing lamps, and eventual unconsciousness. The text recommends early, gradual entry into society through conversation with intelligent friends to build confidence before formal occasions.
