Beadle's Dime Song Book

· 1859

This is Beadle's Dime Songbook No. 1, a collection of popular comic and sentimental songs published by Beadle and Company. The songbook contains approximately sixty compositions spanning various genres: romantic ballads ("Gentle Annie," "Annie Laurie"), nostalgic songs ("Twenty Years Ago," "The Old Folks We Loved Long Ago"), patriotic pieces ("Star-Spangled Banner," "Red, White and Blue"), work songs ("The Miller of the Dee," "The Little Blacksmith"), and narrative songs addressing themes of separation, loss, and homecoming ("Willie, We Have Missed You," "Do They Miss Me at Home?"). Several songs deal with slavery and its emotional consequences ("Nelly Gray," "Poor Old Slave"). Comic dialogues in verse form appear, including "A Thousand a Year" and its sequel. The collection includes both newly composed pieces and popular standards, with copyright attributions to music publishers including Firth, Pond & Co. and Russell & Tolman. The songbook reflects mid-nineteenth-century American and British popular musical culture.
