Juan Díaz Canales
Juan Díaz Canales, born in Madrid, Spain, in 1972, is a Spanish comics artist and animated film director best known as the co-creator of the acclaimed detective series *Blacksad*. He entered comics after working in animation, bringing a cinematic sensibility to his storytelling. His signature style blends lush, painterly artwork with hard-boiled noir narratives, often collaborating with writer Juanjo Guarnido on *Blacksad*, which features anthropomorphic animals in a 1950s American setting. Canales also contributed to the *Corto Maltese* series. His work on *Blacksad* earned him multiple Eisner Awards, including Best Limited Series and Best Painter/Multimedia Artist. Active from 2000 to 2025, he has been credited on 36 issues across titles like *Blacksad: A Silent Hell* and *Blacksad: They All Fall Down*. Later in his career, he continued to balance comics with film direction, solidifying his legacy as a key figure in modern European comics.
