About the series
In just twelve issues published by Editora Abril from 1979 to 1980, Recruta Biruta brought a Brazilian twist to the classic military-training comedy, following the misadventures of a hapless recruit. The series was a localized version of the Argentine comic Sargento Kirk, adapted by the Brazilian team of writer Gérson Lodi-Ribeiro and artist Júlio Shimamoto, who infused it with local humor and slapstick. Though short-lived, it stands as a quirky artifact of the Brazilian comic boom of the late 1970s, showcasing the era's appetite for imported concepts reimagined with a national flavor.
