Debuting in 1934 from The Eastern Color Printing Company, Famous Funnies is widely recognized as one of the earliest true comic books, reprinting popular newspaper strips in a standard magazine format. The series is most closely associated with the Godwin brothers—Frank Godwin, its most frequent artist, and Harold Godwin, a frequent writer—whose work helped define the look and tone of the title. Though it started as a reprint anthology, Famous Funnies played a pivotal role in establishing the American comic book industry, paving the way for the original
