Canardo, Private Eye

Benoît Sokal’s Canardo, Private Eye is a long-running European detective series that launched in 1991 with NBM, following the hard-boiled, cynical investigations of its anthropomorphic duck protagonist. Written and illustrated primarily by Sokal (with Frank Wynne contributing to the English translations), the series blends noir tropes with a distinctly surreal, often melancholy animal world. Its single published issue in this collection belies the scope of Sokal’s larger body of work, which is celebrated for its atmospheric, painterly art and darkly humorous storytelling.
