About this Collection

This collection kicks off the 2010 Slave Labor series, following the adventures of a barbarian warlord on the volcanic moon Io. The story blends sword-and-sorcery tropes with a sci-fi setting, as the title character battles rival clans and monstrous creatures for control of the resource-rich satellite. Written and illustrated by Mike Hoffman, this volume gathers the early issues of the series.

In "Chapter I - The Disaffected Menace," Max seeks guidance from his mentor Tne just as Grymak seizes control of Io—only for Tne to be slain, leaving Max with a mysterious sapling that speaks to him. With help from Moxy and Urk, Max flees aboard the Terror, but when the planet’s financial collapse weakens Grymak’s grip, he’s tempted to abandon his duty for fame and fortune on Mega Vega’s Casinoid. The sapling’s wisdom remains, even as betrayal looms—Mega Vega sells Max out, and Grymak’s forces close in. Written and illustrated by James Turner, this issue features a striking cover by James Turner.
