An expedition to Mexico led by Director Kane uncovers Mayan glyphs and a mysterious Rosetta Stone to decipher ancient writing. During the voyage, Tom grows close to Joyce, the director's secretary, while a jester is sent by a king to fetch the magician Merlo, who possesses supernatural powers and minions with "dead eyes of ancient evil." As the expedition ventures into the remote bog country, an unseen evil force with dark supernatural abilities begins closing in on the group, forcing them to flee through desolate terrain in search of help.
