François Ayroles fills this 2014 Delcourt album's cover with a wonderfully busy scene: a crowd of distinctly drawn characters mill about outdoors, while a large wooden letter "A" stands prominently in the foreground and a tall bookcase is carried through the throng. The warm, muted palette and fine linework give the whole composition an air of cheerful, literary chaos — entirely fitting for a work whose title plays on the double meaning of caractères (both "characters" and "typefaces/letters"). A solo creation from Ayroles in every sense, this is a book that announces its typographic wit right on the cover.
