Some of the boys ride their bicycles on Mr. Bakers lawn and break his bird bath by accident. Baker sees them ride off and calls for them to stop, but they don't. Some of the girls don't blame him for being angry, because they had no right to ride through his yard. They should have stopped and offered to replace the bird bath. Other girls think it would be silly to stop if there was a chance they weren't seen. Things like that are bound to happen when you live near a school and you have to expect it. Susan feels she has to buy a new copy of a book she borrowed from Joan. The cover got torn.
